How to Diagnose a Mobile Phone That Shows No Power

A smartphone that fails to turn on requires tracing the hardware power sequence step by step. When the power key is pressed, a chain of hardware interrupts and voltage transitions must take place.

Step 1 — Power Button Signal Verification Measure the PWRKEY line voltage at the key connector or test point (typically 1.8V to 3.8V). Upon pressing the switch, this voltage must pull down cleanly to 0.0V. If the signal fails to pull down, inspect for broken flex traces or ESD diode shorts.

Step 2 — PMIC Buck Converter Outputs When triggered, the Power Management IC activates primary buck regulators powering core CPU and RAM domains: - **VDD_CORE:** ~0.8V – 1.0V - **VDD_CPU:** ~0.9V – 1.1V - **VDD_RAM:** ~1.1V – 1.8V

If any primary buck rail fails to collapse or output correct voltage, test the feedback loops and inductor connections.

Step 3 — System Clock Crystal Oscillation The main Baseband/CPU clock crystal (38.4 MHz or 26 MHz) must oscillate cleanly. Using an oscilloscope, verify sinusoidal clock signal output at the crystal test points. Missing clock signals prevent the processor state machine from executing boot code.

Systematic logic probing identifies the exact point of failure without guesswork.
