When an unpowered Android device arrives at the workbench, indiscriminate component replacement is both inefficient and counterproductive. Diagnostic precision relies on systematic electrical isolation before any mechanical disassembly or thermal stress is applied.

Phase 1 — Non-Invasive Electrical Profiling Connect the device to a regulated DC bench power supply set to 4.2V with current limiting configured at 3.0A. - **0.00A Consumption:** Indicates an open circuit on VBAT or VPH_PWR, a damaged USB charging port connector, or a blown primary input fuse. - **Instant High Amperage (1.5A–3.0A+):** Direct short circuit on the main power line (VBAT or VPH_PWR). Common culprits include filtering SMD ceramic capacitors adjacent to the Power Management IC (PMIC) or primary charging IC. - **Low Current Pulse (0.02A–0.08A upon trigger):** Indicates a corrupted clock crystal, missing secondary voltage rails (S2, S3, LDO), or uninitialized firmware communication between PMIC and CPU.

Phase 2 — Diode Mode Resistance Mapping Using a digital multimeter in diode mode (red probe anchored to chassis ground): 1. Measure the battery connector positive pin relative to ground. Standard readings range between 0.350V and 0.500V drop. 2. Probe secondary system power rails generated by the main PMIC. 3. Identify low-impedance nodes (< 0.050V) indicating shorted decoupling capacitors.

Phase 3 — Thermal Isolation & Chip-Level Remediation Apply freeze spray or rosin flux smoke over the isolated circuit block. Gradually inject voltage (1.0V–2.5V) into the shorted rail using the DC power supply to observe thermal vapor dissipation, pinpointing the failed semiconductor or shorted capacitor without subjecting the entire board to thermal stress.

Systematic isolation ensures board integrity and builds reproducible diagnostic skills.
